Although the overuse of antibiotics in agriculture is widely known, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is still allowing the prevention of disease to be included in the definition as a therapeutic use of antibiotics.Ask them to take stronger action to control the widespread use of antibiotics in food animal production.

Protect Our Water at the Source; Tell the OEPA that Ohio needs Nutrient Standards
Do Reports Paint a True Picture of Ohio’s Waterways? Learn More at OEPA Public Meetings
February 1st, 2010
On Feb. 2 and 3, Ohio EPA will hold three public information sessions to assist those who wish to comment on the draft 2010 water quality report that depicts the status of Ohio’s waterways. One item we can take away from this process is that we don’t have updated monitoring information about several large rivers in Ohio, and that information is not reflected in the water quality report.
Public meeting details:
- Tuesday, February 2, 2010 5:30 pm, Lorain Main Library, Meeting Room C 351 Sixth Street Lorain, OH
- Wednesday, February 3, 2010 2:30 pm, Ohio EPA, Conference Room B 50 West Town Street Columbus, OH
- Wednesday, February 3, 2010 6:00 pm, Hilliard Public Library 4772 Cemetery Road Hilliard, OH
On December 18, Ohio EPA released the draft 2010 Integrated Water Quality Monitoring and Assessment Report for review and comment. The comment deadline is close of business February 8, 2010. The report fulfills the State’s reporting obligations under Sections 305(b) and 303(d) of the Federal Clean Water Act. It indicates the general condition of Ohio’s waters and lists those waters that are currently impaired and may require Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) development in order to meet water quality standards. Please click here for more information and to access the report.
Ohio EPA needs adequate funding to test all of our rivers and streams, we need recent data to identify and fix water quality problems. We also encourage Ohio EPA to develop nutrient criteria to address increasing challenges from nitrogen and phosphorus pollution. Finally, Ohio has well-developed standards for aquatic life in assessing the health of our rivers and streams, but pollution that impacts recreation and drinking water sources are also important areas that deserve additional attention.
