As precipitation increases due to climate change, it is important that individuals help prevent excess water from entering sewers.  Here are some things you can do at home, depending on how much time you have, to help stop more combined sewer overflows from occurring.

If you have a minute:

  • Take shorter showers
  • Install low flow showerheads and/or high-efficiency toilets
  • Practice other water conservation techniques, such as nighttime watering

If you have a day:

  • If your downspout is hooked into the sewer, disconnect it so that stormwater in your gutters drains into your yard, not the sewer
  • Connect a rain barrel to your gutter system to catch excess water, which can be used to water plants

If you have a month:

  • Plant a rain garden or install a green roof to capture stormwater
